Road rage can escalate in seconds, and a moment of anger can lead to criminal charges, civil liability, or serious injury. As a lawyer, my advice is simple: your priority is to get home safely—not to win an argument on the road.

If another driver behaves aggressively, avoid responding with aggressive gestures, shouting, tailgating, or brake-checking. Retaliating often makes the situation worse and may expose you to legal consequences if an accident or confrontation occurs.

Instead, remain calm and create distance. If it is safe to do so, change lanes, slow down, or allow the aggressive driver to pass. Avoid making eye contact or engaging in any confrontation.

If you believe you are being followed, do not drive home. Head to the nearest police station or a busy public place and contact the authorities if you feel threatened. If you have a dashcam, preserve the footage, but do not use your phone while driving to record the incident.

Remember, the law expects every road user to exercise reasonable care and self-control. Acting defensively not only protects your safety but also strengthens your position should legal issues arise later.

A few minutes of patience can prevent years of regret. On the road, staying calm is often the strongest legal and personal defence.
